
A Note on Bloom's Taxonomy
Benjamin Bloom's analysis of how we think, and his evaluation of the depth or shallowness of thought involved in various mental activities is widely used by educators. This doesn't mean it is the only way to think about cognition; it is simply one useful way to conceptualize our own thinking, and to question ourselves regarding the kinds of thinking we ask our students to do in school.
Ask yourself as you look at the chart: What kinds of activities was I most often asked to engage in when I was a student? What level of cognitive activity would that be if I were to categorize it according to Bloom's taxonomy?
